This week's handful of indie offerings bring very little in the way of depth or variety. Headlined by two rather innocuous looking romantic comedies, the only point of interest is the romantic docu-memoir of the venerable, experimental director Agnes Varda.
THE BEACHES OF AGNES
What: The latest film from the 'grandmother of the French New Wave', Agnes Varda, The Beaches of Agnes continues the vanguard's recent focus on introspective memoir-cinema. It touches on everything from feminism and the birth of the French New Wave to poignant reflections on her late husband Jacques Demy.Where: NY - Film Forum, LA - Laemmle Playhouse 7, Laemmle Monica 4-plex, Laemmle Sunset 5
Why: Film is pretty unique among its sister arts in that self-portraits are usually dismissed as arrogant self-promotion, but if anyone has earned the right to get away it, an octogenarian that lived her whole life challenging the status quo of cinema surely has.
