For Your Consideration - Unsuspecting Victim Edition

For Your Consideration is a weekly round-up of upcoming indie limited releases. The idea is to either expose you to or remind you of films that can't afford to plaster their posters on the sides of buildings or accompany your Happy Meal in toy form.

Focusing on the human dilemma of navigating through the moral quicksand that divides righteousness and desire, this week's rather grim FYC centers around tales of unsuspecting victims. Whether it's dolphins being lured to their deaths in The Cove, parishioners falling prey to a priest-turned-vampire in Thirst, or a junkie unaware that his wife is hiding plans for his demise in Lorna's Silence, no one and nothing is completely safe when faced with humanity's lust for more.

THIRST
What: The eighth feature film from director Park Chan-wook, the most internationally successful member of the Korean New Wave and visionary behind Oldboy and Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Thirst is the story of a selfless priest that finds his faith tested when a blood transfusion leaves himself thirsting for the blood of the people he swore to protect and matters become even further complicated when he finds himself hungry for more than the blood of a local married woman.

Where: NY - Landmark Sunshine Cinema, LA - Sunset 5

Why: Winner of the Cannes' Jury Prize, Thirst is the latest entry into the criminally underrated oeuvre of director Park Chan-wook. His films are often praised and marginalized for their superficial trappings - his sharp eye and violent scenarios often draw comparisons to Quentin Tarantino and his use of graphic violence often finds him mentioned in the same breath as other 'extreme' filmmakers like Takashi Miike, but unlike these 'extreme' filmmakers, he doesn't use these techniques to be 'cool' or commercially successful, his body of work reveals that he's much more interested in what makes humans tick in extreme situations than how much fake blood he can pour on a floor. Often spotlighting characters that seek revenge because they refuse to accept responsibility for their own actions, Park shows a poignant empathy for all the characters in his films - no one is evil just to serve as an antagonist, everyone acts because of very human emotions. In a Park Chan-wook film, the filmmaking and violence never takes precedent over the characters, instead the violence serves to terrifyingly underscore the frailty and plight of the characters in a world where everyone is ultimately looking out for themselves. Featuring another stunning performance from versatile Korean superstar Song Kang-ho, Thirst promises to be another immensely engaging, character-centric piece in the tradition of the Korean New Wave. The Korean New Wave - Foreign Films You Don't Have To Be Afraid Of (TM)

THE COVE
What: The directorial debut of former National Geographic photographer Louie Psihoyos, The Cove is an incendiary documentary that follows a small group armed with state-of-the-art surveillance equipment as they attempt to uncover animal cruelty taking place at a secluded cove near a Japanese fishing city.

Where: NY - Angelika Film Center, The Beekman Theater, LA - The Landmark, The Arclight Hollywood

Why: Thanks to the genuine stakes provided by its undercover nature, The Cove is one of those rare documentaries that will likely garner a lot of mainstream attention. The product of people willing to risk their lives to fight for something they believe in, The Cove is decidedly not for people looking for a balanced debate, but should provide a heart-wrenching experience for anyone looking for a suspenseful, enlightening look about an underreported epidemic.

LORNA'S SILENCE
What: The latest film from venerable Belgian siblings Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, Lorna's Silence is the story of Sokol and Lorna, two Albanian emigrant lovers, that want nothing more than to open a snack bar and live their lives peacefully. Salvation arrives in the unlikely form of Fabio, an aspiring mob boss with a plan. Fabio arranges a fake marriage between Lorna and Claudy, one of his junkie friends, to help her secure Belgian citizenship. Things spiral out of control, when Fabio decides to kill Claudy to marry Lorna off to a Russian mafioso also looking for citizenship. The film revolves around the question of whether or not happiness is worth a man's life as Lorna must decide whether or not she'll warn Claudy.

Where: NY - Cinema Village 12th Street, LA - Playhouse 7, Monica 4-Plex, Sunset 5

Why: The Dardenne Brothers' style of hyper-realistic filmmaking that often focuses on marginalized characters trying to find their place in a post-industrial society definitely isn't for every audience, but if you're looking for an entry way into the work of two of the most influential foreign filmmakers of the last decade, you'll be hard pressed to find a better film than this one. Another highly praised piece of social realism that never feels pessimistic for pessimism's sake - a staple of far too many recent arthouse films, Lorna's Silence is worth considering.

For Your Consideration - BRITMANIA Edition

For Your Consideration is a weekly round-up of upcoming indie limited releases. The idea is to either expose you to or remind you of films that can't afford to plaster their posters on the sides of buildings or accompany your Happy Meal in toy form.

After two sparse weeks, the indie release calendar is starting to pick up again as most of the summer tentpoles have already crashed into theaters. After looking through all of the releases, it turns out that it's Britmania week here at the FYC as the two openings worth recommendation both feature those jolly over-the-ponders trying to make a difference in the world by very different means. The rest of this week's efforts include an uneven horror movie almost worth considering, and two pedestrian star vehicles that never quite shift into gear. Deadgirl's intriguing twist on the horror genre - an exploration of the concept of male juvenile aggression in the context of a zombie film - seems to ultimately be undermined by its blunt and uneven execution. Shrink and The Answer Man both seem to be underachieving efforts centered around trite premises that are hoping to float on the shoulder's of their respective leads with Shrink being the superior endeavor.

IN THE LOOP
What: The first feature film from the brilliant British multi-hyphenate Armando Iannucci ("I'm Alan Partridge," "The Thick of It"), In The Loop is a dazzingly witty film about the importance of savvy word choice in a world where politics is hinged not on careful policy making, but on crafting clever soundbytes for a sensationalistic press corps. When Simon Foster, an inconsequential British government official, accidentally remarks that war in the Middle East is "unforseeable" on national radio, he sparks a political firestorm that sends both the US and UK scrambling to pave over the blunder. Sent off to Washington D.C. to rectify his mistake, Foster finds himself being bandied about between different political factions more interested in passing the buck and advancing their careers than the long-term fate of the world.

Where: NY- IFC Center and Lincoln Plaza Cinemas; LA - The Landmark and Playhouse 7

Why: Because if you haven't had a chance to be exposed the brilliant wordplay and infectious pacing of Armando Iannucci's television or radio work, you definitely need to, as he will no doubt be a film director worth watching in the future. And if you are familiar with his work, then you probably don't need me to convince you why you should see this. Starring the always brilliant Tom Hollander heading up a strong cast of character actors, In The Loop strips away all of the pomp and circumstance of politics glamorized on shows like "The West Wing" and spotlights how the governments of the world are not run by ideological warriors, but instead by normal people whose livelihoods are tied to poll numbers, public opinion, and organizations much larger than the ideals laid out in quaint documents like the Declaration of Independence.

THE ENGLISH SURGEON
What: The first feature film from Geoffrey Smith, The English Surgeon is a powerful documentary about the emotional burden placed on a man dedicated to saving lives while knowing all too well he is only human. Henry Marsh is one of London's foremost brain surgeons, and he has devoted his life to helping others. The film follows Dr. Marsh on one of his yearly trips to Kiev, where he tries to help patients survive against all odds. The equipment is ancient and the doctors there often misdiagnose patients, but it doesn't stop Dr. Marsh from doing all in his power to help people, even when he is faced with a supposedly inoperable brain tumor.

Where: NY - Cinema Village 12th Street; LA - Music Hall 3 starting 7/31

Why: Standing in stark contrast the cartoonishly absurd self-preservation of In The Loop, we arrive at an all-too-real tale of selflessness. Already an established fan favorite on the festival circuit, The English Surgeon is a refreshing reminder of the power of the human spirit in times filled with news about corporate corruption and poor leadership. If that warm and fuzzy statement doesn't pique your interest at all, then perhaps you should consider the movie for its sublime score provided by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, the musical geniuses responsible for the scores of The Proposition and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.

For Your Consideration - Odd Couple Edition

For Your Consideration is a weekly round-up of upcoming indie limited releases. The idea is to either expose you to or remind you of films that can't afford to plaster their posters on the sides of buildings or accompany your Happy Meal in toy form.

This week's FYC is all about odd couples. It provides a perfect study in the extremes of limited releases, (500) Days of Summer is the polished, well-funded studio 'indie darling' that is simply using a limited release to build buzz before it blossoms across the country, while Tony Manero is an example of the niche-y 'art house' foreign film that barely received distribution and is now being sent to wither and disappear on a handful of small screens. And, for the sake of brevity, here is a dismissive summary of every thing else opening in limited release this week: More Indie WWII Dramas.

(500) DAYS OF SUMMER
What: The first feature film from prolific music video director Marc Webb, (500) Days of Summer is a post-modern story of love and rejection. The non-linear tale follows hopelessly romantic copywriter Tom as he combs over the last 500 days of his relationship with Summer, a free-spirit that doesn't believe in true love, trying to figure out what went wrong. These reflections to the highest highs and lowest lows helps Tom not only learn more about his relationship, but - wait for it - the nature of love and life in general.

Where: NY - AMC Lincoln Square, Regal Union Square, AMC Empire 25, Clearview 1st & 62nd ; LA - The Landmark, AMC Century City 15, Pacific's Stadium 14 at the Grove, Arclight Hollywood

Why: Because, damnit, hipsters deserve romantic comedies, too! But seriously, (500) Days of Summer is worth seeing because it's been a long time since romantic comedies actually tried to be any more than formulaic fluff and tackle anything resembling deep emotions or complex issues, and while, by all accounts, (500) Days of Summer isn't exactly a thought-provoking cinema, it is one of the few films to actual tackle the growing phenomenon of the quarterlife crisis. It's well worth seeing for its endlessly charming cast and, if the trailer is any indication, the arrival of a new director to watch.

TONY MANERO
What: The second feature film from Chilean director Pablo Larrain, Tony Manero is a portrait of a man obsessed. When Raul, a small-town dancer enamored with John Travolta's Saturday Night Fever performance, sees a chance at super-stardom when a television station announces a Tony Manero impersonation contest, he single-mindedly pursues the goal of winning, regardless of what might stand in his way.

Where: NY - Cinema Village 12th Street ; LA - Laemmle Music Hall 3

Why: Chilean director Pablo Larrain returns with another study on the effects of obession. Chile's official submission for the 81st Academy Award's Foreign Language Category and part of Cannes 2008 Director's Fortnight, Tony Manero is a small, explosive tale about escapism in a totalitarian society. It's a rare opportunity to see an oft-forgotten piece of South American history viewed as the all consuming background of one man's quest to be famous. All that aside, just watch the trailer below and tell me you don't want to live in the world of Tony Manero for 90 minutes.
